You Can’t Be Half Pregnant
With the deserved increase in popularity of grass fed, grass finished products, and consumers learning about the health benefits of consuming those products, it is important to understand that not all “grass fed” is the same. At Grassworks Farm, we are not simply attaching ourselves to the grass fed market/movement to try to make a few dollars, but instead it is an extension of our lifestyle. The grass fed movement is part of our belief system and our priority to provide the highest quality proteins to our friends and family. We believe that the effort behind developing the skillset to appropriately apply the art and science of management intensive grazing to finish a steer properly is absolutely worth the time and effort. Ultimately, we recognize there are no short cuts. We are aware the term “grass fed” is thrown around a lot, but what we want people to understand is that it really is all or nothing. As the title of this post states, you can’t be half pregnant. Grass fed, grass finished cannot be anything but that in order to receive the benefits of this type of diet. You see, when a cow’s rumen switches from grass to grain digestion, the microbes in their stomachs also switch. Grass and grain cannot be properly digested simultaneously. Once the microbes in the stomach have switched over to digest grain, the nutritional benefits of grass fed begin to erode immediately and in the average time it takes to finish a cow on grain, those grass fed nutritional benefits have been lost. The point is, if you are seeking to buy grass fed beef for the health benefits, you have to make sure the beef you are buying is fed ONLY grass! Otherwise, you are not receiving the benefit you have sought out. Close may count in horseshoes and hand grenades, but not when it comes to grass fed beef!
