Why Grass Fed?

The conventional wisdom seems to be if someone doesn’t “get” your product, you are better served working with the people who do, rather than trying to change the hearts and minds of those who don’t.   There may be some truth to that, but I also know that life is dynamic and our circumstances and preferences, along with our attitudes toward those circumstances and preferences, are constantly in flux.  Sometimes the variations are so small that they are imperceptible and sometimes they are easy to recognize.  My theory is, like a good evangelist, people can be hit with the right message at the right time and suddenly an impact is made.  In this case, we aren’t saving souls, but we do feel that there is little more important than your health and it is worth us talking about.  Of course, there are exceptions, but our health, at its most basic level, is built on the decisions that we make each day.  As is the case with most things in life, it is the incremental nature of those daily decisions and choices that add up in one way or another.  Just as smoking one cigarette wont kill you, smoking a pack a day for 40 years will definitely add up.  The same is true with making good food choices.  No, a salad after a lifetime of pizza and potato chips isn’t going to cure all that ails you, but it is a step in the right direction.  Those little decisions, if executed with frequency, will turn into habits. Those habits result in a lifestyle and that lifestyle will either help or hinder you in achieving your goals.  This is true with your diet, your physical fitness, your education, or any other aspect of your life.  So why should Grass Fed, Grass Finished beef be a choice of yours?  Well, as it turns out, the old saying “you are what you eat” actually rings true.  Many studies have shown the nutritional makeup of beef will vary based on the cattle’s diet.  The following are some of the nutritional benefits of Grass fed vs. Grain fed.

  • Most grass fed beef contains less fat than grain fed beef which means fewer calories.

  • The fat in Grass Fed is simply better for you. It contains much less monosaturated fat, up to five times as much Omega-3’s and about twice as much CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid).

  • Significantly higher levels of Vitamin A.

  • Significantly higher levels of Vitamin E.

  • Tends to be higher in antioxidants.

Yes, it is true that none of these things are the equivalent of finding the fountain of youth. However, actively making the choice to incorporate Grass Fed, Grass Finished beef into your diet will serve as one of the building blocks for your better health.  For all of these reasons, we have made the commitment at Grassworks Farm to take the time to move cattle every day or two, introducing them to a new diverse mixture of grasses, legumes and forbs. In this process we are creating healthier pastures, healthier cattle and ultimately healthier consumers.
